Many young people who start working in construction ask me the same question:
“How do I get my UTR in the HMRC app?”
Before you can get your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), there’s one essential thing you need to do first - register with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the exact steps to register in the HMRC app as a sole trader. Follow them carefully - each step is important.
Step 1: Download the HMRC App
To begin, you need the official HMRC mobile app
You can download it from:
Google Play Store (for Android)
Apple App Store (for iPhone)
Search for “HMRC” and install the official app from HM Revenue & Customs.
This app will later allow you to:
View your tax information
Check your National Insurance
Access your UTR once it’s issued
Step 2: Open the App and Start Registration
Once installed:
Open the HMRC app
Tap “Sign in”
Choose one of the options:
Government Gateway
GOV.UK One Login
Create new sign in details
If you’ve never had an HMRC account before, select:
👉 “Create new sign in details”
Step 3: Enter Your Email
You’ll now need to:
Enter your email address
Receive a verification code from HMRC
Enter the code to confirm your email
Step 4: Create a Secure Password
Your password must be strong. It should:
Be at least 12 characters long
Include:
Uppercase letter
Lowercase letter
Number
Special character
Step 5: Create Your Government Gateway ID
After registration, you will receive your Government Gateway User ID (12 digits).
⚠️ Important:
Save this ID somewhere safe, you will need it every time you log in.
Step 6: Set Up Security Verification
You must enable 2-factor authentication (2FA).
Options include:
SMS code
Authentication app
Voice call
Each time you log in, HMRC may send you a security code for protection.
Step 7: Verify Your Identity
To complete your registration, HMRC may ask you to confirm your identity.
You might need:
UK passport
UK driving license
Pay-slips
Credit history questions
National Insurance number
Some users may also verify their identity using the GOV.UK ID Check app.
Step 8: Create Your Personal Tax Account
Once everything is verified, your Personal Tax Account will be created automatically.
Inside the app, you’ll be able to see:
Your tax code
National Insurance
Income history
Self Assessment services
Your UTR number (once registered)
Registering in the HMRC app is the first and most important step if you want to work as a sole trader, especially in construction.
Take your time, follow each step carefully, and make sure your details are correct.
